Are you a huge Athens United fan and want to make a journey down to Georgia to take in a game? You can plan your trip online with Satellite Internet and there’s more to see in Athens than just a great soccer team!
Take in ANOTHER sport: Athens has a lot of athletic talents and their American football team (The Georgia Bulldogs) is consistently one of the best in NCAA. The University of Georgia has a great soccer team as well, so after you’re done with United take in a college matchup.
The Restaurant Scene: You’re going to get hungry watching all that soccer so head to downtown Athens to get a bite after the game. Gyro Wrap is a local favorite as is Depalmasif you’re planning on making it a late night you’ve got to head to The Grill.
Picturesque Surroundings: Just outside the playing fields for Athens United is some of the prettiest piedmont in the country. The campus is heavily forested and downtown makes for a great stroll – you’ll likely run into other United fans while you’re out, too!

The Rules of the Game of Soccer

There are 17 official rules of soccer, but these are some of the basic ones. The first is that there is a maximum of 11 players on the field, one of which must be the goalkeeper, or goalie. The minimum amount of players to constitute a team is usually seven. Use of the arms or hands to move the ball is not permitted, except by the goalie. The goalie can only do so in a specific area in front of their goal.

The players are required to wear a shirt, socks, shorts, shoes and shin guards. They are not allowed to wear jewelry or anything else that might be dangerous in the field of play. Goalies must wear clothing that distinguishes them from the other players.

A standard match is played with two 45 minute periods known as “halves”. Unlike American football, the clock keeps running even when the ball is out of play. The referees have the discretion to replace time during extenuating circumstances such as injuries or substitutions. When the ball goes out of play, it is usually put back into play via a penalty kick, a throw-in, a corner kick or a goal kick.

AUSA(Athens United Soccer Association) was not started by a single person or organization like any ordinary organization. AUSA was adopted by two rival organizations merging in 1986. Those rival organizations were, Applejacks and Athens International. Now the first organization to have a soccer team in Athens was Athens Parks and Recreations, however they were not affiliated with the Georgia Youth Soccer Association. Applejacks was an entirely different situation. Applejacks evolved when some older boys were to old to play but still wanted to participate. Applejacks gave the older players that chance with elevated competition. It was obvious that these two teams were average, but as one they were a dominate force. Athens United had been born, being and organization that focuses on promoting the sport of soccer all over Athens. AUSA is the only organization of its kind in the area and yet its ran by mostly volunteers and a couple paid coaches. AUSA provides programs for there players that would help them in the future. Soccer camps, development programs, and scholarship awards for boys and girls. Tiffany Eberhart attended Clarke Central High school and received the girls scholarship in 2011, she is now attending UGA. The AUSA is not just a association that you bring your kids to just to watch them learn soccer, you bring you children out to start there future.

Athens United has been developing youth soccer talent for over 20 years. Located out of Athens, GA, this club is four tiered in nature, offering developmental programs for boys and girls U5-U12, boys and girls academy programs are available for ages U9-U12. Athens United has select programs for guys and girls from U13 ” U17 and also a college experience program at the U16 ” U19 levels.

The developmental program is geared primarily towards providing youth with a fun and laid back environment to learn the game. Academy programs are for accelerated development and intended for youths who are looking to play the game at a higher level. The select level is a continuation of the academy program and designed to challenge players and push them to compete at their highest ability level.

The Athens United program hosts two tournaments annually to showcase their talent and also help out in the community, by tying their tournament to a community charity.

Athens United has had eleven club members named to the Olympic Developmental Program in the last few years and one player named to the U14 USSF National Team Pool. Other recent program successes include eleven players from the class of 2011 signing letters of intent to play at the collegiate level.

Athens United-s European development approach and dedicated coaches makes this a club to watch at every tournament they enter.
