Athens United Soccer Association Scholarship Program
Since 1974, when we were known as "the Applejacks," Athens United Soccer Association has been at the forefront of teaching and promoting soccer in the Athens area. We have trained coaches and referees, players and parents. We have hosted tournaments, sponsored international exhibition matches, built fields, and overseen umpteen zillion youth and adult matches.
In our continuing efforts to recognize and reward excellence, Athens United Soccer Association offers two $1000 college scholarships annually, one for boys and one for girls. In addition, beginning in 2006, AUSA offers a third scholarship for someone who is going to to play soccer at the collegiate level. This scholarship is sponsored by the Camp family, long-time supporters of AUSA.
With this scholarship program, the Association recognizes and rewards young people whose accomplishments have reflected well on the community and the sport of soccer. Our objective is to recognize more than just scholastic or athletic ability. We want to recognize young people whose accomplishments have reflected well on the community and the sport of soccer; well-rounded individuals who may serve as role models for younger players.
Any high school senior soccer player in Athens and surrounding communities is eligible to apply. Applications are distributed in March of each year and awards are made in early May. Applications are evaluated on scholastic achievement, soccer achievement (both playing and non-playing achievement), community service, and a written essay. Bonus points are awarded for applicants having a history with AUSA and for those demonstrating leadership and citizenship in their activities. Final decisions are made by the voting members of the AUSA Board without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin.
